Canada's trade surplus widens to four-year high as exporters race tariffs
Exporters pulled shipments forward ahead of new U.S. tariffs, pushing the August surplus to its widest point in more than four years.
Canada's trade surplus widened substantially in August to $4.2 billion, a more-than-four-year high, as exporters rushed to increase shipments to the United States ahead of new tariffs from the Trump administration.
Canadian exports to the U.S. surged 8.1% in August even as imports fell 2.5%, a combination that pushed the bilateral surplus with Washington to roughly US$7.9 billion — nearly double where it stood earlier in the year.
The pull-forward effect is a familiar pattern ahead of tariff deadlines, but it also leaves open the question of what happens to export volumes once the front-loading tapers off and the new tariff regime is actually in effect.
The trade data arrives alongside separate domestic developments, including Bill C-39 — a central piece of the Carney government's economic agenda — clearing its first vote in the House of Commons.
