Bell Canada hits construction milestone on quadrupled Saskatchewan AI data centre

The facility has grown from an initial 300-megawatt plan to a 1.2-gigawatt hub, part of a roughly $1.7 billion buildout the federal government has welcomed as sovereign AI infrastructure.

Bell Canada marked a construction milestone this month on its Saskatchewan AI data centre, a project that has grown substantially in scale since it was first announced.

The facility was quadrupled from an original 300-megawatt design to a 1.2-gigawatt AI infrastructure hub, with total project costs of roughly $1.7 billion — about $1.3 billion of which is expected to be spent within 2026 alone.

The Government of Canada separately welcomed the buildout as a major new investment in sovereign AI infrastructure for Saskatchewan, framing it as part of a broader push to build domestic AI compute capacity rather than relying solely on foreign-owned infrastructure.

Bell also tied a $1 million mental health commitment to the construction announcement.
